A Broken Home Mac OS

Ok I have a February 2011 (pretty sure that's right) that I bought refurbished under about 8 months ago. App messenger free. It has had some problems and I brought it in to the apple store and they said they'd send it in to have the graphics card replaced, but I half wonder if there's a lot more going on. I used to be able to log on, it would just freeze with dead pixels all over, but now I can't even log in. I get the spinning beach ball whenever I enter my login. I am totally fine just sending it into apple, but none of my stuff is backed up.
